Embossed Brass Coal Jug
A handsome vintage embossed brass fireside jug, made in England, with a tall tapering body, a generous flared pouring spout and a striking angular handle. The body is richly embossed with an old tavern scene of figures seated together at an inn, in the style of Dutch and Flemish genre painting, and the warm brass catches the light beautifully in the deep relief. Traditionally used beside the hearth for coal, kindling or ash, it makes a lovely decorative piece today: on a mantelpiece, by a log burner, filled with dried flowers or long matches, or as part of a collection of English brassware.
